Coursework to Career: How Our Studies Shape Our Future

Avriel Salazar – Minor in Forensic Psychology

My minor in Forensic Psychology gives me a unique perspective that I can bring into the education and training field. Through my courses, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of behavior, motivation, and how people process emotions—all of which are incredibly valuable in teaching and learning environments. In the classroom, this background can help me better support students who may be struggling emotionally, behaviorally, or socially. I’ve learned how to recognize signs of stress, trauma, or mental health challenges, and how to respond with empathy and appropriate strategies. These skills are beneficial in roles like school counseling, special education, or even training environments that support at-risk youth or adult learners. Overall, my forensic psychology coursework helps prepare me to be a more informed, compassionate, and effective educator or trainer who understands the “why” behind people’s behavior and learning needs.

Jada Lee- Minors in Special Education and Psychology

Minoring in both Psychology and Special Education has given me a well-rounded understanding of how children and adolescents develop, learn, and respond to different teaching approaches. Through my Psychology minor, I’ve gained insight into cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development, which helps me better understand student behavior, learning differences, and how to support mental health in the classroom. My Special Education minor has provided me with practical skills like writing and implementing IEPs, using assistive technology, and applying individualized instructional strategies. It has also deepened my understanding of special education law, inclusive practices, and the importance of advocacy.  Together, these two areas of study allow me to approach teaching with empathy, evidence-based strategies, and a strong awareness of how to create inclusive, supportive learning environments for every student.
